This project was done during the spring of 2017 and in collaboration with Innovations Plattformen at Västra Götalands Regionen. Through thorough research, testing and prototyping we created a better work environment for the nurses at the maternity care. Nurses at this department are the ones that retire the youngest compared to any other hospital department due to work related strains and pains. Almost half of all women giving birth do it on their side and sometimes that is even medically suggested. Despite this there exists no aid to help the women to spread her legs in the last parts of giving birth. Often the nurse has to lift the leg which was seen as one of the most straining tasks that had to be done during a day’s work.
The goal was to create a solution that helped the nurses without compromising the need for close and intimate contact and support with the mother, which was crucial in order to provide good care. During the project we were in close contact with midwives and nurses from both Swedish and Norwegian hospitals. The solution was very appreciated and a version of the leg cradle will be implemented at Östra Hospital in Gothenburg.
